NDSA Outreach Conference Call June 13, 2011

Participants:

Dan Dodge, Carol Minton Morris, Elizabeth Joffrion, Deb Rossum, Sue Manus, Bill Lefurgy, Jared Lyle, Barrett Jones, Helen Tibbo, Druscie Simpson

Social Media:

Carol released a survey about social media practices and encouraged the group members to fill out the survey. The object of the survey is to identify social media users among the group so that a community of practice can be developed amongst the members. The survey is at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9RKFP3Y

Digital Preservation in a Box:

Several members of the outreach subcommittee have been working on the idea of "Preservation in a box" - a ready-made set of resources that could be bundled and used by a specific audience to help educate a specific population.

The resources will be available as a digital "box," perhaps on a website, but could also be distributed on physical media like a thumb drive.

Audience: Library science students and educators; library, archive or other cultural heritage institution employees; others charged with preserving digital information as part of their jobs or for providing digital preservation training.

Right now, resources have been suggested and compiled on the wiki (http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Outreach_Resources#.22Preservation-in-a-Box.22) We've narrowed down subject areas and related websites, reports, and other supporting documentation, focusing on introductory or high level materials that would be suitable for this audience.

We've also discussed engaging different library and information science faculty, whose students could help us "try out" the box. Catholic University was the first contact we've made, and they've agreed to be beta testers.

July NDIIPP/NDSA Summer meeting:

The Outreach Working Group will be hosting a 1.5 hour workshop during the upcoming meeting. The workshop is open to any participants in the summer meeting, and the goal is to present the draft version of the Box and get feedback and comment from participants. The workshop will be structured so that participants have the opportunity to help identify resources, edit materials and generally contribute to a better version of the Box. The outcome of the meeting is a draft version of the materials that can be shared widely across the digital preservation community.

Over the next two weeks the structure of the workshop will be fleshed out of the listserv, and a pre-meeting final version of the draft will be developed.

Action items:

  • Members of the Working Group will fill out the Survey on social media use.
  • Each member of the group will contribute 2 resources to the “Box”
