Meeting Notes

Digital Preservation 2012 Meeting in July

The joint NDSA/NDIIPP yearly meeting (this year called “Digital Preservation 2012) will be held in DC July 24-26 (see http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2012/05/digitalpreservation-2012-annual-ndiipp-meeting-set-for-july-24-26/). The third day of the meeting will be a Curate Camp (see http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2012/06/curatecamp-processing-processing-dataprocessing-collections/). Due to contracting issues, the venue for the event has not yet been set, but it will definitely happen during those dates in DC. Make plans to join us!

Action Team Updates:

Storytellers Action Team:

The Stories group held a call last month (notes at http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Meeting_Minutes_5-24-12). Kim Schroeder of Wayne State is working with team of students to develop PSA-like media pieces. They will present their work at the NDSA meeting in late July in DC. After that, they’ll attempt to come up with some projects that they’ll try to get funded on Kickstarter. They should have drafts of their work completed soon and plan on sharing the scripts with the NDSA Outreach group. Kim is pioneering a process that can be replicated at other universities.

Digital Preservation in a Box Action Team:

The Box action team has been active. Jane Zhang just finished her course at Catholic University on “Digital Curation” that incorporated some of the Box tools. One of her students wrote a fine blog post on the experience that was published on the Signal blog (http://blogs.loc.gov/digitalpreservation/2012/06/canned-preserves-reaching-out-from-the-classroom-and-beyond/). Jane, Dever Powell, Butch Lazorchak and Sue Manus put together a poster on the Box for JCDL 2012. It’s very possible that the poster folks can share the original digital files so that others can take the model poster and use it to create their own. A PDF of the JCDL poster and the paper that accompanied it are at http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Digital_Preservation_in_a_Box#Box_Outreach_Tools.

The Box has been migrated to a Wordpress instance and is now at http://ndsa.ezphotoscanning.net/main/. Before the Digital Preservation 2012 meeting it will migrate to a new URL, dpoutreach.net.

The next month will see improvements to the Wordpress interface and updates to the content in time to go public in late July.

Kickstarter Action Team:

Lots of great things happening on the NDSA-curated Kickstarter page (http://www.kickstarter.com/pages/NDSA), with lots of things get generously funded. More assistants needed to scour Kickstarter for good things to share. The NDSA will continue to explore ways to be an incubator of projects for Kickstarter.

NDSA Communications Plan Drafts:

At the 3/29-3/30/12 Joint Leadership meeting of the NDSA Coordination Group, the Outreach WG was charged with preparing a Communication Plan to guide the work of the NDSA. Several drafts have been prepared with more to come.

Comments on V4 are currently being accepted. It would be ideal if NDSA members could pass the draft on to the communication professionals in their organization for review. Please submit all comments on V4 by COB June 22, 2012.

The current version of the doc can be found at http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Communication_Across_the_NDSA#Communications_Plan
