The mission of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance is to establish, maintain, and advance the capacity to preserve our nation's digital resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
 
Mission Statement Discussion about this draft statement (see Appendix B) indicated that "citizen" was too restrictive for the group. While the NDSA is a national alliance, the benefit of digital material and preservation practices cannot be restricted by boundaries of a nation. The discussion resulted in a second draft of the statement:

There was some interest in exploring whether publicize or sustain might be a better word choice than promote but there was no clear consensus from the group regarding a preference.
