Meeting Notes

OWG Storytellers Deborah Rossum, SCOLA, Bob Downs (Center for International Earth Science Information Network, and Carol Minton Morris, DuraSpace, (rec.) met on Oct. 20,2011. As usual we are looking forward to your feedback and ideas if you were unable to attend. Meeting notes follow with tasks highlighted. The Storytellers will meet again on Nov. 17 at 3:00 pm. ET.

•Report on the "call for stories" that was sent through multiple lists/channels last week

--9 story suggestions have been submitted

--Call is open and we are hoping to collect more ideas!

•Process for review/selection

--The group reviewed and discussed submissions --It was determined that they were all useful, representing a good cross-section of institutional and personal examples of different aspects of digital preservation approaches. --ACTION ITEM Carol will thank everyone who had submitted ideas and let them know that we will be in touch with next steps in production process --ALL are encouraged to:

•Template for a 3-5 minute video structure

-Production options --work with LOC video production staff --enlist production help from NDSA members --ACTION ITEM Deb will develop a call for assistance with video production using the following video structure outline to ensure that respondents understand the nature of what we are aiming for:

1.) Introduction: Quick overview of what happened–what was the problem? (talking head, this should be the same look and feel for each video) 30-60 seconds

2.) What kind of media/storage/hardware/software is the story about? (could be quick still images with narrative behind). How was the digital information originally stored? 20 seconds

3.) Explanation of the elements that made it impossible to recover information (suggestion was made to create a canned image/icon/logo disruptive graphic that would represent digital disaster in every video--tornado, flood, fire, time--to open this segment) 60 seconds

4.) Show how the recovery took place/did not take place 30-60 seconds

5.) Wrap-up/conclusion 30 seconds

6.) Screen with NDSA Outreach resources for institutional and personal digital preservation and archiving 20 seconds
