Discussion of the role of this group

To get us started discussing why we formed this group, Michael said that when we began talking about breaking up the larger group into more specific areas/groups - though necessary to do to engage people - he had concerns that there would be less opportunity for the discussion of the big picture, overseeing the entire Content Team activities. That sparked the idea for this group.

We talked about the role of this group - not quite an executive committee. There is value in the smaller groups focusing in on specific topics, but also valuable to have one group "stand back and squint" at whole process, to provide a holistic view. The idea is that this is not a coordinating group but a group to take a look at the whole picture of content. This group may notice things that the larger CWG may want to take on; can serve as an extra brain or eye for the CWG.

Suggestions for a strategic vision emerged during discussion:

  • Map of activities across the groups to help this group see what's going on across the board
  • Shared sense of what we're working towards - helping to frame work of this group
  • We could spend some time looking at what's happening, seeing where natural alliances might occur. get people to work together where they are not.
  • Looking at where there are no activities occurring and explore what why
  • Help bring in outside prospective - has an ear to events outside the NDSA - can bring that in, things in community and users of content.
  • Keeping an eye on the whole, higher level. each takes on a section or activities and report back to the group, offer ideas. With an eye to the outside. Issues arising in larger community.
  • Make sure things that are need to get discussed are being discussed.
  • Having a pulse on the work that's happening but understanding the impact of the work on our groups and others.
  • There is overlap with other groups outside of NDSA, need to be in tune with that.
  • Longer term view, help connecting people.

We decided to meet quarterly. Each member of this group will "sign up" to keep an eye out for a content team, action team, or other CWG thread or activity, and report back quarterly. Using the road map of activities, we'll have defined areas of observation to track.

Progress of Content Teams/Action Teams

Abbie gave a brief update at a very high level of the content teams - all have met but getting the word out on the wiki and list isn't streamlined yet. Will work to get something from them quarterly. There are concerns about next steps with Registry team and how to properly describe our activities now. Current statement needs refreshing. It says now:

Current scope of work, needs reworking and we talked about this group helping craft a new statement:

The Content Working Group’s current scope of work is to:
      A) Develop or contribute to a registry of content already preserved by NDSA members.
      B) Develop a clearinghouse that will enable a variety of stakeholders (content producers, archives and libraries and other potential preservationists) to:
Determine what specific types of content or collections are at risk.
Identify at-risk content or collections for preservation.
Match orphan collections with appropriate trusted partner for access and preservation.

NDSA meeting in July

We'll be having an in-person meeting July 24th in the morning. Also a poster on the content teams, which we may need some help with.

Action Items

Michael will take a stab at writing a "vision" statement and will distribute to this group for comment.

Abbie will work on a map of the various activities and distribute so we can see the state of the state, and members can sign up to monitor activities.

And, maybe someone will think of a better name for our group?
