May 23, 2012 Meeting Notes

Participants

Brett Abrams, John Faundeen, Jaime Stoltenberg, A.J. Worcley, Bob Downs, Erin Engle, Zhiwu Xie, Diane P.

The Geospatial subgroup of the NDSA Content WG discussed future activities listed in the draft workplan. The end goal of the call was to prioritize the activities.

While those on the call expressed high interest in industry outreach and file formats (proprietary and open source), call participants noted that duplication of efforts for some of these tasks may occur within institutions or with other working groups.

Many expressed that a strong benefit of joining the group was sharing projects, experiences, results, and lessons learned with each other. Specifically, the GeoMAPP informational calls were identified as particularly useful and structured calls. In addition, call participants were interested in some of the GeoMAPP products and how institutions may be using them in an "applied GeoMAPP" topical discussions.

The group suggested structuring future calls with 30 minutes for presentations by a group member on a particular relevant topic and the remaining time for discussion.

Future Group Agenda Topics

  • John Faundeen will organize a presentation on geospatial data appraisal practices with folks from NARA, LoC, GeoMAPP, CIESIN, and USGS, allowing each 5 minutes.
  • The July conference call overlaps with the NDSA/NDIIPP summer meeting. The group should decide to cancel or reschedule the July call.
