Activity charters for work group activity

  • NDSA has developed a template for formally describing the activities and projects of the working groups. Easier for articulating what each group is working on
  • Abbie has started a draft for CWG Content Teams
  • does not need to be for large/formal projects necessarily, can be for smaller activities that folks are gathering around
  • Sections of the draft that need work:
    • work on statements
    • strategic value

Thoughts on developing the Activity Charter:

    • Will need to be generic / high level
    • We do not define the problems/goals of the case studies

Thoughts on the case studies

    • Value is in the knowledge sharing and the clarity yielded by the writing process
    • The case studies are not for sharing with the stakeholders per say, but to guide our internal collecting communities on how to work with the stakeholders.
    • We must think about how we are going to educate our stakeholders.

Volunteered to help:

    • Michael Stoller and Margie Maes (sent an email to Abbie after the call)

Report from content teams

News Media and Journalism team

  • have started drafts of case studies:
    • Community / local news
    • Citizen Journalism
    • Digital e-prints of newspapers

Meet to be held in a few weeks to continue to work on these.

Government Content Team

  • had conference call last friday and discussed case studies
  • discussed the type of preservation scenarios they face
  • collecting database information = easy
  • GIS = hard
  • have an interest in the case studies including different institutions defining their unique or specific preservation challenges.
  • Talked about addressing the need for more cooperation from stakeholders/creators at the outset - for better metadata, formats.
  • Is the hope that the case study will be used for educating stakeholders?

Geospatial team

  • No facilitators were on the call, but a Glen was present at their last meeting, and relayed the following.
  • One of the co-facilitators had to step down, looking for a new one
  • There was talk about outreach to ESRI and the private sector

Science Mathematics, Technology and Medicine

Have a meeting scheduled to discuss potential case studies.

Social Sciences

  • Still having high-level conversations / have a google doc in progress
  • Are thinking about how to approach the case studies, may be more specific than general

Cultural Heritage

  • Have been working on the case studies in relation to oral histories and IP / privacy
  • After today's discussion, thinking these might be too narrow a focus - they will revisit their approach to case studies and speak to other formats.

Arts & Humanities

  • Have recruited 9 new members via NDSA_ALL list. Will be setting up meeting soon.
  • Erik Rau asked what is keeping cultural heritage and Arts & Humanities apart? Discussion to occur offline between Jonathan and Erik.
  • Ben will be reaching out to NDSA-all to gauge interest in the Tumblr preservation project Rhizome is working on

Next Call

November 7th, 11am ET (Webex details will be sent out prior to the meeting with the agenda.
