Updated on Definition of digital preservation

Abbie reported that "what is the definition of digital preservation for NDSA" has been brought up in many working groups, including ours, and LC team has talked about recommending one definition that we all would then agree upon. Something should come out on the NDSA_ALL list soon, but ALA ALCTS Preservation and Reforming Section Working Group on Defining Digital Preservation is what LC has recommended using. Work Area Updates

NDSA:Content Registry Action Team (Group A)

Daniel reported on Group A. Work has started. The first two steps are to look at existing registry projects. Rachel, Abbie, Arlene, Christie have gotten started. See their work so far here: http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Existing_Registry_Projects

The group's second step to come up with a definition as to what counts as digitally preserved. We can look at the definition that Abbie will send out; it is important to have same understanding across working groups. As we look at different project registries, we're noticing that some are registries of what has been digitized - we are including them for now but the goal is to develop a list documenting what is being preserved.

The plan is to have the existing registry projects list ready for the March meeting of CWG. From there we'll see how ready for our next steps, which will be more of a challenge. NDSA:Clearinghouse Action Team (Group B)

Kristine reported on Group B and restated their objectives. The group is tackling one at a time. In their first call, they started to determine what types of content are at risk, and specific collections that are at risk.

They decided to meet again once a month, one week prior to this larger meeting, so they can report back out to CWG.

They started to assemble examples of at-risk content - currently 11 examples, which Kristine read through. They welcome more from other members of action team or this large group.

Online phone directories is one that was send by Abbie after the meeting; Kristine will add. She encouraged others to send more ideas (directly to her or by adding to the wiki). Not a perfect list - we're in brainstorming phase. After they get a fairly comprehensive list, Glenn and Kristine will meet to start to categorize (others welcome to help). Haven't started that yet - waiting for other feedback.

Daniel agreed that it looked like a good list - kudos for including local government and telephone directories. Municipal documents are of high interest/concern. Cathy wanted to be sure state documents are included. Budgets have caused changes/cuts in preservation of Texas state documents. Those remain on the list.

Kris recommend that we state records and documents - archivists have specific meanings. Both are important, depending on who you are talking to, people think of it in different ways.
