Notes

Preserving (Digital) Objects With Restricted Resources (POWRR) project based at Northern Illinois U. has an IMLS grant to host a series of introductory digital preservation workshops.

Discussions have centered on how the NDSA can leverage the POWRR workshops to benefit the digital stewardship community. Early discussions centered on coordinating POWRR workshops with regional NDSA meetings in Chicago and the San Francisco Bay-area.

POWRR workshops are one-day events to get people started with digital preservation. They involve 20-30 participants, will utilize the OCLC Walk this Way report, supply some introductory information, help participants create a plan and help them remain connected to digipres community.

POWRR will hold its first workshop in conjunction with the Midwest Archives Conference in Kansas City in late April. They may do a test run with the Association of Theological Libraries in Chicago in early/mid-April as a test run.

POWRR would like to help host a combination workshop/NDSA regional meeting in the Chicago area sometime during the week of Oct. 20-26, 2014 to coincide with Open Access Week. This is inspired by current Illinois legislation mandating Open Access policies at Ill. Universities receiving federal funding, as well as a possible open access bill being proposed by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin.

The agenda of the 2-day event will be modeled on the NDSA Philadelphia regional meeting scheduled for Jan. 2014. NDSA regional meeting. A POWRR workshop would be held on one-day, followed by a reception similar to what is planned for Philadelphia (though perhaps smaller scale), then hold an NDSA regional meeting in the same location the next day.

There are a number of potential locations in the Chicago area. NIU has 2 satellite campuses in the area. Other partners might include Chicago State University, the Adler Planetarium, Northwestern University, Columbia College. The U of Illinois also has a conference center in the Loop.

POWRR will take care of local arrangements. Library of Congress NDSA staff will assist with planning and communication. It is thought that LC might be able to offer one staff member as a participant in the regional meeting as a speaker.

The group also discussed the possible of a similar set of activities in San Francisco in the May/June 2014 timeframe in conjunction with NDSA partners in the regional, most specifically the Internet Archive. POWRR has been utilizing free IA resources in its training with local Illinois memory organizations, and an event that partners with IA could build on that training.

Reminder: June 9-13 is Open Repositories conference which has strong participation for NDSA members.

Actions:

  • POWRR will share the Illinois “open access” legislation with call participants.
  • Butch will contact Internet Archive about interest and dates for the San Francisco-area event.
  • All will think more about possible programming.
