Update on the Digital Preservation in a Box Activity

Dever Powell, a member of the Box Action team, presented his ideas on how to move the Box activity forward. He proposed several opportunities for Outreach in the DC area to colleges including Howard and Gallaudet as well as a partnership with Catholic University to engage students in the classroom with the Box materials and to enlist them to analyze the current materials and work with the NDSA Outreach group to improve the materials.

Jane Zhang from Catholic was enthusiastic about this and suggested that it could be implemented in a Digital Curation course she’s teaching that begins in Jan. 2012. Dever and Jane will connect offline to work on the details.

Volunteers are needed to join Dever, Jane, Blane Dessy and Lisa Gregory on the Box action team. Decisions need to be made on the current content and a location needs to be found to house the Box materials.

Update on the Stories Action Team

Amanda French provided an update on the Stories action team. The impetus for the Stories team was the recognition that it’s useful to collect stories about lost data, particularly ones that have a happy ending. The team is exploring how to collect and present the stories, and is exploring rich media, particularly video, as a way to share the stories. Still having discussions about where these would live. Youtube might be a useful outlet for disseminating the videos but there would have to be another preservation option.

They will soon prepare a draft call for videos along with a template that will be released to the NDSA-ALL listserv. The next Stories Action team call is coming up on Sept. 22. Volunteers are needed to participate in the Stories action team.

Other Items:

  • Glenn Cook suggested that the group look to explore granting opportunities with groups such as IMLS to try and find resource support for NDSA activities.
  • Butch noted that the LC secretariat is working on making some generic NDSA slides available for the members to utilize for presentations, and also has a draft of a brochure. The NDSA Outreach group could take the ongoing development, tracking and maintenance of these under its purview.
