Carol Minton Morris, co-chair, could not be on the call today but will be at the NDIIPP/NDSA partners meeting.

Today’s call was about preparing for the workshop at the partners meeting, which will be centered around the “digital preservation in a box” toolset. The workshop will be one of three concurrent sessions being held Wednesday July 19 at 3:30 p.m. The workshop will last an hour and a half.

The original idea for the “Box” came out of NDIIPP’s personal digital archiving events geared towards providing guidance to the general public on how to preserve their own personal digital information. Based on the interests of the Outreach Working Group membership, the concept was expanded to include digital preservation in general, and the initial focus by the Working Group was on the Library and Information Science education community.

A subgroup consisting of Blane Dessy, Lisa Gregory and Dever Powell shaped the original materials into a rough draft, with the further inclusion of NDIIPP “personal archiving day” materials.

The call opened with a review of the current “Box” contents, with a request for immediate impressions and suggestions from the group. Is the content listed appropriate? Is it complete? http://www.loc.gov/extranet/wiki/osi/ndiip/ndsa/index.php?title=Digital_Preservation_in_a_Box#Box_Contents:

Katherine Skinner pointed out that there appeared to be several possible audiences for the Box and that it was difficult to populate the Box until the audience was clear. Should there be three boxes? One for “practitioners,” one for “educators” and one for the “general public”?

Elizabeth Joffrion pointed out that what seemed missing for her were the resources for someone just getting started (individuals and institutions). Something beyond Digital Preservation 101, including resources out there in the field, including grant funding?

Glenn Cook: Perhaps the Box is a “tool store”: a place where people can design their own box. We identify the tools that go into the store by category.

There was no final determination of Box audience during the call. Participants suggested that the question of audience could open the discussion at next week’s workshop.

The workshop at the July NDSA/NDIIPP Partners meeting will vet the current Box materials and structure. The remainder of the call was spent working out the particulars of how to best utilize the workshop participants.

After much discussion, a basic workshop structure was hammered out. The workshop will open with a brief presentation on what the group’s been working on, then a discussion of the question of “audience” for the Box. The participants will then break out into to discuss the contents of the Box in smaller groups.

Some of the breakout groups can be established in advance (such as a group to discuss the structure of the Box and where it might live) while others can be established depending on participant interest arising from the “audience” discussion.

Group members are welcome to review the material in the current version of the Box on the wiki and add any resources, though the basic structure will remain the same until after the workshop.

Volunteers from the NDSA Outreach group will be needed to edit the wiki in real time during the workshop. Sue Manus, Katherine Skinner, Blane Dessy and Deborah Rossum have already volunteered, but more will likely be needed.
