NDSA Outreach Working Group Conference Call Monday February 14, 2011, 3:00pm EASTERN

Participants:

Blane Dessy, Deever Powell, Deborah Rossum, Dan Dodge, Helen Tibbo, Carol Minton Morris, Diacorda Amosapa, Barrett Jones, Laura Lookabough, Michelle Gallinger

Notes:

The call opened with a proposal to fold the Action Teams' work back into a "Committee of the Whole" to expedite progress. This will bring the whole group together to work on defining the messaging, audiences and resources for the work of the NDSA. This proposal was met with agreement by the group.

The discussion then moved to look at the work of the “Mission” action team, and an appraisal of the catch phrases that had been submitted through Ideascale. Some of the phrases introduced and discussed included “bits are not forever,” “what if Benjamin Franklin’s hard drive had crashed?” and “dead sea thumb drives.”

The phrase “Saving Today for Tomorrow” resonated most fully with the participants. A wide-ranging discussion followed on the phrase. Some concepts still in need of refinement:

• What is an eloquent way to describe the “what” of digital preservation? • How to bring in the core NDSA concepts of group cooperation/togetherness/collective action to the statement phrase?

A “Saving Today for Tomorrow” page has been created on the wiki for discussion and refinement:

The group will spend the next month working via the wiki and email to refine the phrase, then will discuss the results more fully at the next conference call in March.
