Amy Kirchhoff, Portico

Biography:
Since 2006, Ms. Kirchhoff has been the Archive Service Product Manager for Portico and, since 2009, the Archive Service Product Manager for all of ITHAKA, including JSTOR. In 2009 Ms. Kirchhoff spearheaded Portico’s effort and participation in a CRL preservation audit of Portico that concluded with Portico being the first preservation service certified as a trustworthy digital repository by the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). The audit confirmed that the majority of Portico practices conform to the Trustworthy Repositories Audit and Certification Checklist (TRAC) and other metrics developed by CRL through its analyses of digital repositories. Currently, Ms. Kirchhoff leads the ITHAKA Preservation Management Working Group, a group that ensures the preservation needs of all ITHAKA services are being met. Prior to her position as Archive Service Product Manager, Ms. Kirchhoff held a variety of technical and management positions within ITHAKA and JSTOR. Ms. Kirchhoff has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian from the University of Rochester and a Master of Arts degree in Library Science from the University of Arizona.

Interest in serving on the Coordinating Committee:
Portico is committed to participation in community efforts toward digital preservation. Each individual organization involved in preserving our digital cultural heritage can only do so much, and thus collaborative efforts between like-minded organizations are key to ensuring the preservation needs of all digital content are met. Over the past five years, Portico has archived and continues the ongoing preservation of 16 million e-journal articles, digitized newspaper issues, digitized books, and born digital books. Over the course of 2010, Portico migrated over 15 million preservation metadata files, from our old format to our new format, and currently preserves over 200 different file types. Portico and Ms. Kirchhoff will bring this practical, large-scale preservation experience to the Coordinating Committee, a point-of-view that will help ensure the success of this fledgling effort. In addition, Portico is deeply involved in a number of collaborative efforts, including work on JHOVE, development of NISO standards, and participation in Digital Preservation Coalition activities. We believe that the thorough understanding Portico has of the current national and international digital preservation efforts will provide significant guidance to the Alliance.

Communities represented:
Portico represents the digital preservation community. In addition, Portico has extensive experience with the digital preservation needs of both the scholarly publishing and academic library communities.
