Updated on Definition of digital preservation
Abbie reported that definition of d p has been brought up in many working groups and LC team has talked about recommending one definition that we all agree on. Something should come out on the list soon but ALA ALCTS preservation and reforming section working group on defining digital preservation could be one to use. [link]
Work Areas
NDSA:Content Registry Action Team (Group A)
Work has started - first two steps to look at existing registry projects. Rachel, Abbie, Arlene, Christie looking at this - gotten a start already
Second step to come up with definitiaion as what counted as digitally preserved. We can look at the definition that Abbie will send out = important to have same understanding across working groups. This step - different project registries, but some are "this is being scanned" - develop a list of documenting what is being preserved. Then we'll go on to our next step.
Our plan is to have existing registry projects ready for the March meeting of CWG. From there we'll see how ready we are for next steps.
Next steps will be more of a challenge. It is on the wiki - [ add link]
NDSA:Clearinghouse Action Team (Group B)
kristine reported on Group B - restarted objectives. Tacking one at a time. First call - start to determine what types of content are at risk or collections that are at risk.
Decided to meet again once a month, week prior to this larger meeting so we can report back out to CWG.
We started to assemble examples of at-risk content [add link] - currently 11 examples, we welcome more from other members of action team or this large group.
[read the list]
Online phone directories is one that was send by Abbie after the meeting. Send more ideas! After we get the list fairly comprehensive Glenn and Kristine would meet to start to categorize (others welcome to help). Haven't started that yet - waiting for other feedback. Email to Kristine or put on the wiki. Not a perfect list - we're in brainstorming phase.
Daniel - looks like a good list - kudos for including local government and telephone directories. Municipal documents are of high interest/concern. Cathy wanted to be sure state documents is included. Budgets have caused changes/cuts in preservation of Texas state documents.
Glenn - we're prioritizing rather than eliminating - state docs are still in.
Kris - recommend that we put records and documents, archivists have specific meanings. Both are important. Depending on who you are talking to, think of it in different ways.
Google groups has been set up for Group B. John Weise set it up, haven't really started to use it yet. [put a link].
Our next call will be March 2nd at 11am EST. Agenda and call details to be sent a few days prior.
