Building on the recommendations from [https://osf.io/uc8b3/ Surveying the Landscape: Use and Usability Assessment of Digital Libraries], the User Studies Working Group's Content Reuse subgroup is focused on developing a needs assessment to better understand the desired scope and functionality of a toolkit designed to measure digital library object reuse.

The Reuse subgroup is thrilled to announce that they are the recipients of a 2017 [https://www.imls.gov/grants/available/national-leadership-grants-libraries IMLS National Leadership for Libraries] grant ([https://www.imls.gov/grants/awarded/lg-73-17-0002-17 LG-73-17-0002-17]) to research the needs and ideal functionality of a digital library object reuse toolkit!
The working group will research, develop, and/or deploy recommended practices for digital content reuse in galleries, libraries, archives, museums, repositories, and other cultural heritage organizations.

An IMLS National Leadership/National Forum Grant will enable stakeholders from a variety of institutions to meet with members of the project team to discuss the issues facing implementation of content reuse assessment, the tools and resources identified in the environmental scan, necessary infrastructure for the toolkit, and next steps towards toolkit development.

The ultimate goal of the toolkit will be to provide a roadmap, tools, techniques, and documentation to assess the reuse of materials within a given digital library in order to help libraries plan and deliver content to different user groups. The toolkit will provide analysis of the purpose, strengths, and weaknesses of available tools and allow the user to choose the resources that best fit their assessment needs. Included resources will support the full lifecycle of reuse assessment, from defining goals, assembling vetted tools, and pointing to current studies and research in this area.

About the Project

From July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018, members of working group conducted the Developing a Framework for Measuring Reuse of Digital Objects project. The project conducted a formal needs assessment of the digital library community to determine desired functionality for a future reuse assessment toolkit.

The project was sponsored by an IMLS National Leadership/National Forum grant (LG-73-17-0002-17) award.

In September 2018 the project team released Setting a Foundation for Assessing Content Reuse: A White Paper From the Developing a Framework for Measuring Reuse of Digital Objects (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/BQJVR). This white paper (a) provides a broad overview of the Measuring Reuse project, including background information on the AIG, (b) outlines the methods used by the project team, (c) summarizes results, and (d) discusses potential next steps.
