Discussion, Kate and Andrea - last call as co-chairs, S&P for the future.

  • The topic will be a broad discussion about future directions for the group. Andrea and Kate are stepping down as co-chairs. If you would like to play a larger role in the WG consider volunteering to be a co-chair.
  • Meg is currently making personal contacts with call regulars to encourage folks to consider chairing.
    • Meg on Coordinating Committee
    • Concerned about lack of co-chairs for S&P at this critical junction; some tasks for chairs for this cycle have lagged due to lack (ex: meeting invitations to calendars)
    • Has been making personal phone calls to some S&P regulars; some decisions still outstanding
    • Interested folks are encouraged to volunteer.
  • Interim coordination - What might S&P look like for the next few months?
    • Meg – people providing conference or meeting reports/recaps.
  • Notes that at a DH conference they use the term “preservation” differently than we might – how do we reach out to this community?
  • Reports from ALA?
    • Mariella – archiving of email collections – ePADD, ePADD 2 project; access rights, etc. Who else is dealing with these issues?
      • National Archives is dealing with these issues
      • Archiving email symposium last spring. Kate working with Harvard and Stanford, etc. looking at lifecycle of email records for identification of gaps in tools.
      • Presentation at SAA in August relevant.
      • Erin – Videos from the email series from last spring will be linked as soon as links are available
      • Mariella - Appraisal and preservation both interesting aspects of the overall email challenge
      • Meg – Best Practices Exchange (BPE) a good place for finding email resources. Email a very fluid space. Harrisburg BPE showcase of email techniques, using NLP and other automated methods for appraisal and access rights management.
      • Dorothy Waugh at Emory might be a god contact for Mariella
    • Meg – international projects – Persist project cites NDSA work.
      • Winston – Charles Beagarie (?) wanting to build bridges between his work and ours.
    • Kate - Preservation of social media
      • Meg – Nat Archives focused on policy
  • Action teams instead of WG?
    • Meg favors present WG structure so that we might maintain community.
    • Bethany has not heard from Coordinating Committee any concrete proposal for change. Has the sense this would be a titular change only. An “ interest group” might allow for more casual relationships, allowing for “action groups” or “working groups” to precipitate out of interest groups as needed.

Wrap-up

  • Meg – proposes:
    • We commit to Feb meeting as a recap of current conferences and meetings (iPRES, ALA midwinter, AHA, CNI, DLF, CurateGear, upcoming 2/23 Boston NDSR Un-Conference)
    • At end of call coordinate the email discussion for the meetings following
    • Hope for a chair by then.
  • Next call – 2/29/2016, 1 pm ET.
