Public Instance of the Box

The Box started on the NDSA wiki, then was moved to an Omeka instance hosted by NDSA members EZ Photo Scan. After a bit of struggle with the Omeka tool, a Wordpress instance was created and all the content was migrated to http://dpoutreach.net/. As of May 1st, 2016, updated Box content is being migrated back here, to NDSA's now-public wiki.

Box Outreach Tools

Jane Zhang, Dever Powell, Butch Lazorchak and Sue Manus created a "Box" poster for JCDL2012. Below are a PDF of the poster and the paper that accompanied it for the JCDL proceedings.

Ideally we'll post the original graphic files for the poster here at some point in the near future so that other folks can create their own "Box" posters.

Renaming Conversation

At one point there was a discussion that the name "Digital Preservation in a Box" was not entirely descriptive of the content and purpose. Feel free to suggest alternate names for the "Box":

Purpose [OLD]:

"Digital Preservation in a Box" is designed as a gentle introduction to the concepts of preserving digital information. Preserving digital information is a new concept that most people have little experience with. The guidance is basic and is meant to be a place to get started.

This box of resources can be used to provide introductory-level education those who may have little to no knowledge of digital preservation and digital curation issues, to help them with stewarding their own digital information, which might include Photographs, Audio, Video, Electronic mail, Personal documents and Web archives.

Audience [OLD]:

A general audience who routinely create or manage digital information, but who may need a working knowledge of this area for digital preservation on the job or for training others on how to preserve digital resources. The audience includes library science students and educators; library, archive or other cultural heritage institution employees; others charged with preserving digital information as part of their jobs or for providing digital preservation training.

Structure [OLD]:

“Digital Preservation in a Box” is a toolkit of resources.

The Box will be available as links to resources, be modular so that users can pull out only what they need or want, and will include items such as slides, videos, posters and handouts. Links to online tutorials or webinars are acceptable.

A draft version of the Omeka instance for the Box is now up at http://ndsa.ezphotoscanning.net/omeka/home

The Box resources might also be modeled after an open-source software project, in that documentation on the Box will be available on a public web site where users can also download a tar, zip or other compressed file that includes all the resources necessary to use the Box. (See this Sourceforge page for an example of the potential look: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tuxpaint/)
