Kate Wittenberg is Managing Director for Portico, a digital content preservation service that is part of ITHAKA. Before taking on this position in September 2011, Kate was Project Director, Client and Partnership Development in the Strategy and Research group at Ithaka, where she focused on building partnerships among scholars, publishers, libraries, technology providers, and foundations with an interest in promoting the development and sustainability of digital scholarship and learning.<br/><br />
Before joining Ithaka, Kate directed the Electronic Publishing Initiative at Columbia (EPIC), a collaboration of the libraries, academic computing division, and university press, where she developed digital publications in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. At EPIC, Kate's projects included Columbia International Affairs Online, Digital Anthropology Resources for Teaching, and the National Science Digital Library Core Integration program.<br/><br />

This is a dynamic time for both academic publishers and libraries, and this environment provides both opportunities and challenges for those of us concerned about preservation of digital content. The community will need to work together to explore sustainable preservation infrastructures and systems and to encourage and enable cooperation between not-for-profit and commercial organizations in finding innovative solutions. As we set the vision and implement plans for Portico, I want to be aware of and sensitive to the needs and interests of the larger community.
