Mar 04, 2013 2pm-3pm

In Attendance
*Ben Vershbow, New York Public Library
*Dan Dodge, Thomson Reuters
*Jane Mandelbaum, Library of Congress
*Jefferson Bailey, Metropolitan New York Library Council
*José “Ricky” Padilla, Intern- Library of Congress
*Shelia Morrissey, ITHAKA
*Trevor Owens, Library of Congress

Innovation Insights Award
*Prepare the page (change dates on existing page) and get people to start nominating
*Trevor: nominated the Pop-up Archive
*The WG should announce that we are looking for nominations
*Old list had decent bit of nominations but a lot
*Trevor and Ricky will update list
*Important to remember that nominees should still be alive
*Purpose of the Awards is to nominate projects from different fields or people that don’t already have many awards. People who normally wouldn't come to our attention

Interviews
*Interviews: Ongoing, Sheila SCAPE and DPC event. William Kilbride, Scape Project. Preservation at scale. All of interest.

National Agenda document
*Exciting research topics: up on the Draft version of the agenda on the wiki.
*Jane has been doing research to see what research is on digital preservation. Used Google scholar, not journal aggregates.

Speaker Series
*Speaker series: Funders idea discussed with analogy of speed dating
*SWAT: Conversations on this, around the NYPL space.
**Lots of agreement that this would be a good thing to do – media archeology lab in NYPL collaborate with metro. Possibility to do this out at long island city location. Possibility for NYU ITP and or CUNY. Pratt’s campus (Might be a good idea to separate out getting the work done in NYPL’s long island place, and having smaller space at NYPL for public programming.)
**Should look for alternatives of NYPL as space provider (speak to Don about this)

Digital Preservation Stack Exchange
*Last mentioned 10 months ago
*Move of private beta and into public
*Already has near 70 questions
*WG asked to think of ways to get more people involved
**Possibility is to incentivize like an invite get to go to a conference or we interview that person
*WG should think of different listservs that could add to this and send it to them
**Some lists are TADA, Photographers association, SNIA, ELDB, and AMIA
*Suggested that we advertise to people in DAM works (including students), science data management, and traditional conservation preservation community.
*See if Lori Emerson and more Digital Humanities people can pass it around

Other Notes
*Partnership with e-recycling to buy old hardware off them really cheap
*Think of new digital preservation pedagogical work (it would be hypothetical work to then be applied)
**Wait for after the agenda
**WG has heard discontent about digital preservation grad programs. Area could need some innovation

* Trevor Owens- Library of Congress

Presentations vs calls
* Trevor asked if the presentations were a good way for us to work. John said he liked the presentations from the OSS vendors.
* Coordinating comm report on top issues relating to presentations.
* Next presentations:
** February 26 Fedora 2 pm
** Hydra March 19 3 pm ET
* Group was asked to think about what are really big infrastructure issues for preservation for us to discuss. If there were other ideas for open source software projects or initiatives?
* Other options for presentations were:
** Bit Curator (Cal Lee said he would be fine with presenting it)
** OpenRefine (formerly Google Refine)
** DPLA open source (good to hear more about what they are creating)

2014 National Agenda for Digital Stewardship
* Micah mentioned favor for the presentations and raised the preservation agenda question.
** He was concerned this working group hadn’t contributed to the Agenda so far.
* Explained Agenda as a nationwide agenda covering 1,3,5 year emerging issues in technology and other
* Put on agenda for this group for the March 26 call.
* Trevor said he will pull out chunk of Agenda that seems most Infrastructure related.
* Andrea said she will send out the notes from the Standards group wiki on brainstorming related to the NDSA agenda.

2013 Storage Survey
* Rerun Survey to collect data again.
** Decision to rerun survey every 2 years.
** Last survey was run from August 2011 – November 2011
** Ricky will send the past survey questions to be reviewed; followed by the survey report
* Survey review and refinement
** Enough changes that it could be useful.
** Some questions were confusing – so we’d want to refine those.
** Micah said we should start uniting our efforts to begin refining the survey and building a conversation around it.
** He also suggested we wait for D-Lib’s feedback before we start seriously working on the revision of the survey questions
* Plan to target organizations outside the NDSA members
** John wants more of a response from the commercial side.
*** He suggested we invite them to the September meeting
** It was suggested we should think about what population we are generalizing to. What are museums and archives doing to some extent? Can we identify a reduced set of key questions and get it off to NDSA members about where they are into the range of communities. Where are we in relation to these other communities?
** Discussed that only an additional 10-15 non NDSA members could probably be added.
** The Interesting potential organizations to include that were mentioned were:
*** MLB (Not just vendors with products but folks with content. Also MLB best use of high data coming in at a high rate)
*** Disney and Universal (they are doing top to bottom asset survey as to how they are dealing with their assets so they may be interested in the survey)
** Trevor proposed to get membership organizations, and get their lists to target for survey. Options that were mentioned are:
*** ARL
*** SAA
*** NASCIO
*** AMIA
* It was decided that the preliminary results should be ready for the storage meeting in September.
** At the meeting we could ask for people to respond to the survey and those who haven’t filled it out could (data from these late survey was suggested to be less significant than the data already obtained by that time)

** Bit Curator (Cal Lee said he would be fine with presenting it)
Current Work Objectives
*NDSA:Open Source Software Investigate, share, and recognize emerging practices for use and development and sharing of open source tools and other software that enable digital preservation.
*NDSA:Discussions on Preservation Storage Topics: Summaries and salient points from the WG's bi-weekly open conversation on detailed aspects of preservation storage. Topics discussed: encryption, (others forthcoming).
* Storage Survey: For the first year the group's primary project was an exploration of member's approaches to storage. We began with an exploration of cloud providers, see NDSA:Cloud Presentations. From there we developed a set of NDSA:Qualitative Storage Questions which 10 members responded to. From there we developed and implemented a survey of the members: Draft Storage Survey. The final report and a series of blog posts on this project are still being finalized.

Potential Future Projects
*Investigate, share, and recognize emerging practices for use and development of computer forensic tools that enable digital preservation.
*Encourage communities with highly specialized needs (e.g., geospatial, datasets, observational data) to develop storage networks or access services that can serve the entire community.
