The goals, aims, and deliverables of the Metadata Working Group were decided in the kick off meeting by participants. Broadly, we aim to:
* Work collaboratively on a white paper that will be an aggregate of a number of areas of work...
** the first being a literature (and tools) review of metadata assessment work so far (current focus of our work) - http://bit.ly/MetadataAssessDraft
** then further clarifying for our work metadata assessment metrics and definitions
** then building out a metadata assessment rubric
** as well as capturing metadata assessment use cases.

See more about the group's goals and discussion on them at http://bit.ly/metadataAssessment

DLF Assessment Interest Group: Metadata Working Group
(Metadata Assessment Working Group)

Introduction to the Metadata Assessment Group within DLF AIG
This group is open to anyone who is interested in taking part. There are no minimum or membership requirements, though we hope you’ll take as active a part as you’re able and willing.

The Metadata Assessment Working Group aims to build guidelines, best practices, tools and workflows around the evaluation and assessment of metadata used by and for digital libraries and repositories. The group hopes to offer deliverables and recommendations that digital library and repository users can implement for metadata assessment and metadata quality control.

This group should not focus on prescriptive recommendations for metadata (using one schema versus another, or comparisons of controlled vocabularies, etc.), but rather how (both functionally and to what metrics) to measure, evaluate and assess the metadata as it exists in a variety of digital library systems. Future work could lend itself to then using that assessment work to decide a pathway for metadata enhancement. This framing is very much influenced by the flurry of interest, activity and discussion around metadata assessment that occurred just after DPLAfest 2015.

Metadata WG Projects in 2016
The goals, aims, and deliverables of the Metadata Working Group were decided in the kick off meeting by participants.

Broad Aims + Description of the Metadata Assessment Group within DLF AIG

Metadata WG Scope & Aims in 2016
The goals, aims, and deliverables of the Metadata Working Group were decided in the kick off meeting by participants.

Broad Aims + Description of the Metadata Assessment Group within DLF AIG

Metadata WG Scope & Aims in 2016
The goals, aims, and deliverables of the Metadata Working Group were decided in the kick off meeting by participants.

Metadata WG Scope & Aims in 2016
Beyond the preliminary focus (foci) given above and by the DLF AIG, the goals, aims, and deliverables of the Metadata Working Group will be decided in the kick off meeting by participants. Some possible areas of work include (but are not limited to):
* building framework around a moving targeting of defining metadata ‘quality’ and how to support flexibility there in tandem with metadata assessment recommendations
* definitions & metrics for metadata assessment (including some possibilities for that below, please expand/define/redefine as you see fit):
** metadata quality as it appears in different contexts (local repository vs harvested index)
** record completeness (how much descriptive metadata is enough?)
** metadata consistency (internal, within a collection vs external with conformance to common authority sources)
** metadata interoperability: a function of quality, completeness, consistency: metadata generated for one specific system/use case needs to be usable in other systems/use cases
** How to refine above for:
*** value for direct human usage
*** value for indirect software usage
** use cases for metadata assessment functionalities
** tools that exist for metadata assessment - including how to use and understand the results
** agile or responsive workflows that involve metadata assessment

We hope to have a number of metadata assessment deliverables to offer up to the community and larger AIG group at the end of 2016 - in time for the 2016 DLF Forum. These deliverables will be determined and grow out of the Metadata Assessment Working Group interest, in particular, the goals and aims set at the kick off meeting.

Ongoing Metadata Assessment Working Group Communication
The Metadata Working Group will primarily communicate through the DLF AIG Metadata Working Group Google Group. There will also be regularly scheduled virtual meetings, the frequency and timing of which will be decided at the kick off meeting on January 29, 2016.

We will also have a gathering at the 2016 DLF Forum (attendance to this in person meeting is not required for folks to be involved in this group).

All the work will be done in an open documentation space - probably Google Docs - which we invite anyone to comment on or edit. The links will be shared here and on the Google Group as work begins.

This Wikipage will be used to capture definite information - meeting times, decided deliverables and goals, etc.

DLF Assessment Interest Group
The DLF Assessment Interest Group (AIG), founded in 2014, seeks to engage the community in developing best practices and guidelines for various kinds of digital library assessment. This wiki will be a central location for documentation and collection of resources to assist those seeking to assess their digital libraries.

Working Groups
Using the Digital Library Assessment Framework, we formed four working groups in the fall of 2014 in areas of strong interest to the DLF AIG community:
* Assessment:Analytics
* Assessment:Citations
* Assessment:Costs
* Assessment:User Studies

Each of these four groups has been working over the past year to develop white papers and tools, which will be presented at the 2015 DLF Forum in October.

In 2016, the following working groups formed/are meeting now:
*Assessment:Metadata

In addition to visiting each working group's wiki page above, you can also learn more about the AIG's most recent work by reading "Developing Best Practices in Digital Library Assessment: Year One Update" in D-Lib Magazine's November/December 2015 issue (Volume 21, Number 11/12).

Background
Research and cultural heritage institutions are, as a matter of course, providing online access to converted and born-digital scholarly and cultural content. As the amount of that content continues to grow, there is an increased need to strategically standardize our assessment efforts.

The DLF AIG is concerned with:

* determining how to measure the impact of digital collections;
* developing areas of commonality and benchmarks in how we measure collections across various platforms;
* understanding cost and benefit of digital collections; and
* exploring how can we best collect, analyze, communicate, and share such information effectively across our various stakeholders—from collection managers to scholars.

The DLF AIG was born in the spring following the 2013 DLF Forum after a working session called “Hunting for Best Practices in Library Assessment” garnered over 50 volunteers to continue the discussion after the conference, and a second working session on altmetrics was also met with huge interest. A Digital Library Assessment Google Group was established to provide a space for practitioners to discuss assessment efforts. At the following 2014 DLF Forum, an assessment panel discussed a new NISO initiative to develop standards for altmetrics, a new web-based cost estimation tool for digitization, and both qualitative and quantitative results from digital library user studies. The panel, like the working group the year before, was followed by a lively discussion about how to further the development of best practices for digital library assessment. Again, many community members volunteered to continue the discussion, and four working groups formed in November 2014. These groups were tasked with developing to best practices centered in the assessment of digital libraries, in the areas of user studies, analytics, cost, and citations.

A previous DLF AIG Working Group also focused on measuring benefits in digital libraries.
